What does the accordion represent? Why is it important in the story?

Throughout the whole movie, what does the accordion represent? and why is it important in the story?

Referring more to the movie than the book.

The accordion represents different things to different people.... that's what makes it so special. For Hans, it represents the man who saved his life.... for Max, it represents that man who will save his. For Rosa, the accordion symbolizes her husband. For Liesel, it represents her voice..... through words, she makes her own kind of music.

She didn't dare look up, but she could feel their frightened eyes hanging on to her as she hauled the words in and breathed them out. A voice played the notes inside her. This, it said, is your accordion.
