What are the main conflicts?

The conflict involves the internal struggles of Liesel, the protagonist, and her adopted family during WW2 Germany. Liesel and her adoptive parents, the Hubermans, struggle to maintain their humanity during Hitler's reign of terror. THey are German and try to help Jews like young Max Vandenburg by hiding him in their basement. They perform subtle acts of rebellion despite the grave consequences of being found out.
