Metaphors:

Liesel observed the strangeness of her foster father's eyes. They were made of kindness, and silver. (Chapter 6)

Beneath her shirt, a book was eating her up. (Chapter 21)

For me, the sky was the color of Jews. (Chapter 52)

Similes:

"Like miniature horseshoes with a layer of icing sugar." (Page 159)
