Hans is Liesel's buffer; he is a loving foster father, and he serves as a go between when his overly critical wife comes down on Liesel. Liesel trusts Hans above all other people, and he is the one responsible for teaching her to read, write, and roll a cigarette (that was their ice-breaker).
