The Book Thief

The Hidden Sketchbook

“There was also a great longing to tell Rosa Hubermann that she loved her. It’s a shame she didn’t say it” (443). Why do you think Liesel hesitates to tell Rosa this? Why will she regret not saying it?

Rosa was a hard woman. She wasn't affectionate or motherly, but she did love Liesel. On the other hand, Liesel gravitated toward Hans, as he was a genuine father fiigure for her. Hans adored her.... and that's where her affection lay. As far as regrets.... Liesel will likely say she regrets no having said the words, but I think Rosa knew, as did Liesel.
