This quote relates to Max's journey to the Hubermann home. Max is a Jew, traveling alone, and trying to blend in. He carries a copy of Mein Kampf for protection.... a book a Jew would never carry. Thus, is protects him, possibly saves him. He's sweating because he is afraid of discovery. Max is literally running for his life.
