What Rudy meant saying "I want to grow up before I die" ? He was scared of nazis/SS officers or he suppose that he will be sent to the war saying that?

This was a time of war and life was precarious. Rudy knew he was not sympathetic to Nazis. This could get him killed. Even if he did go to war, his chances of being killed were high.
