Is it worse to publically punished or to internally punish yourself? Explain your answer.

This question calls for your opinion. What do you think? Would it be harder for you to internalize your guilt and subsequent punishment on yourself? Or would it be worse to publicly admit your guilt, punish yourself, and have it all over with.
