The author amkes list to provide descriptions, particularly, through the character of Death. His tone is blunt and factual, a being of few words, and yet, through the lists, he moves the plot, almost like a conductor or anouncer.

A REASSURING ANNOUNCEMENT
Please, be calm, despite that previous threat.
I am all bluster—
I am not violent.
I am not malicious.
I am a result.
