Max is very thin and looks far older than he really is. His experiences have physically aged him.
From the book itself, we have this quote about Hans...... he is definitely far more special than his appearance would have us believe;
"To most people, Hans Hubermann [is] barely visible." "He was always just there. Not noticeable." Chapter One
He is also described as a "straight walker," which would mean he has impeccable posture (normal for a musician).
Rudy on the other hand is described as having "bony legs, sharp teeth, gangly blue eyes, and hair the color of a lemon" Chapter 8
