How does Liesel's new “papa” Hans, encourage her to read?

I think that handbook encouraged her cause he was a big influence on her , an he would help her a lot , an what I think encouraged her more was that he put a chalk bored down stairs. That helped her even more

Hans encourages Liesel by reading to her, teaching her the alphabet, and then moving their lessons to the basement where he would teach her using paint of the cement walls. Not a very good reader himself, Hans determination to help Liesel, serves to encourage her.
