Once Max joins the family and moves into the cellar, Liesel becomes his eyes and ears to the outside world. She uplifts him daily by sharing her own life, and in turn he truly finds a reason to live through the only thing she has to give him; her stories. Liesel represents life and hope, and she symbolizes the innocence of what life "could" be. She is the reason Max can believe and hold onto the vision of a future.
