How does Hans maintain his sense of individuality through out the book?

Hans has a lot of pressure to conform to Nazi ideology. The safety of himself and his family depends on Hans looking like he conforms. Hans, however, finds small ways of being his giving and sensitive self. He paints over graffiti against Jews and tries to drops food for starving Jewish prisoners that are being marched through the streets.
