THe characters, especially Liesel, feels an empathy for books and people. The only thing good about the burnings is that they might allow Liesel to liberate a book. Likewise Liesel and the Hubermans share a deep sympathy for the Jews that are tormented. They put their lives on the line for people who are systematically brutalized by the Nazis.
