How can we see Rudy's kindness ?

During the chapter Bread Eaters, Liesel and Rudy ride ahead of the parade, into a forest of pine trees. They scatter bread along the road for prisoners to pick up. Rudy often sticks up for Liesel. He fetches her book in the icy river water.
