What are readers supposed to take away from the text? What quote shows the main theme of the text? (preferably mortality and/or literature and writing)

I think the universal theme deals with how humans can be at once heroic and sick. People like Liesel, Hans, Rudy, Max... are capable of such grit and compassion while others like the Nazis are capable of such evil. I think Death sums this dichotomy up in his last words at the end of the novel, "I am haunted by humans." This is such a loaded quote. Death is an outside observer. He is not human so being haunted by humans is a fascinating prospect. Death seems compelled by the endless complexities and paradox that humans are capable of.
