Flashback: Why do you think the narrator provided a flashback to Hans Humbermann’s WWI experiences?

This flashback helped the reader better understand Hans' ties to Max. From this flashback, we come to understand Hans' relationship with Max's father and the reasons Hans has Max come to stay..... the reasons he protects him.
