The Book Thief

Do you think German citizens, such as Alex Steiner or Hans Hubermann, were justified in showing passive acceptance to the Nazi regime? What else might they have done?

I believe that Hans and Alex Steiner each put their families above all else.... that would be their reason for passivity. Blatant opposition would have ended in death, whereas, support would have gone against their personal morals. Each man held to his beliefs.... Hans gave a little girl some much needed love and saved the life of an innocent Jewish boy. I think they followed their hearts and consciences, which is all anyone can do.
