For Max, the accordion is a remembrance of his father. Hans still has Erik's accordion, and it was Erik's actions that kept him from certain death during the war. The accordion, that brought two men together as friends was also a bridge between Hans and Erik's family. Hans quickly becomes a father figure for the young man.
