How do liesel live compared to how max lives and how does max life give liesel purpose? At what point do liesel and max become friends? What is the main reason why max gave liesel that book for her birthday ?

Liesel lives openly in Hubermann home, whereas, Max lives in the basement.... in hiding. Liesel and Max become friends after his illness, and after her gifts her with the book "The Standover Man". Max gave book her the book as a thank you and token of friendship.
