In The Book Thief, Liesel Meminger's beauty is most exemplified in the inner beauty so many never take the opportunity to see in other people. The death of her family, her relationship with Max, and the realization that it is far more important to risk your own life for the life of another, than to walk through life safely wearing blinders. Liesel's world falls apart, but she rebuilds it through establishing true, loving realtionships with others, even in the face of death. When everyone she loves is killed, it's her inner strength that brings her through, her sense of hope, her resilience in the face of disaster. This is what is meant by "beauty in the face of reality."
