The Book Thief

Death claims that "the sky was the color of Jews." What color do you suppose that is? Why might Death classify the sky as the color of Jews?

I think the author purposely leaves out the colours to make the reader visualize this terrible scene. My image looks like it is in black and white. Perhaps, because it is so horrible, my mind can't comprehend it any other way. Death describes the sky this way to accentuate the number of Jewish people dying during the Holocaust, in Germany, and other locations in Europe. Normally, Death sees colors like, black, white, blue, etc. But, during these times, there were so many Jews being murdered, that they overshadow the other colors as Death takes them across the sky.
