Max and Liesel are both without familes, they both have nightmares about their pasts, and they both carry a degree of survivor's guilt. Common experience makes for a strong bond, as Max and Liesel are the only two people in the novel who might actually be able to say, "I know how you feel". Lastly, it is my opinion that the author used these similarities to bring these characters together, as the things they have in common made their relationship all the ore plausible.
