In using flashback, Hans' character becomes more complex. We learn that he is not a member of the Nazi Party, that his to paint Jewish homes and cover up Jewish graffiti was responsible for the tabling of his application. As a result, Hans' business suffers, his standing in the community is threatened, and his relationship with his son is ruined despite their former closeness. We also become aware that Hans Junior has been fully indoctrinated in Nazi ideology, which caused him to revolt against his father. Ironically, he also calls his father a coward for privately opposing Hitler and the Nazi platform..... foreshadowing the danger Hans will face as he continues to help Jews..... something far more dangerous than supporting Hitler.
