The Power of Words: Book Burning
Kind of Activity:
to familiarize students with the historical setting of the novel
Show your students the following video clip (or another comparable clip) of Goebbels speaking at a book burning. Ask students to write down five words that describe their feelings or reactions to seeing the book burning in person. Break the students into pairs or groups of three, and give them five minutes to discuss how viewing the book burning differed than their reactions to simply reading about it.
