Food was scarce . . . for everyone, not just the Nazi prisoners. The German people themselves were suffering since ALL was being sacrificed for the Nazi war effort . . . ALL on the heels of the Great World Depression. Still, with the lack of food, more importantly the Spirit endures, surviving by its own self-sustaining hope.
