The Bonesetter's Daughter Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The symbolism of love

The author uses the character Ruth to symbolize love. Ruth is a selfless character who dedicates her life to serving others. For instance, Ruth is a mother figure to her boyfriend's two daughters, and she treats them affectionately, as if they were her biological children. Similarly, Ruth is caring for her sick mother and is not complaining. Consequently, the responsibility bestowed on Ruth is only possible because she is affectionate and ready to serve with humility.

The autobiography

The autobiography symbolizes Lu Ling's history and family links. When Ruth's mother's health situation worsens, Ruth decides to read her autobiography and discovers many things she did not know. For instance, Ruth learns that Precious Auntie is the most important thing in her mother's life. Additionally, the autobiography reveals much about her mother's past dating life with various men before she settled on one man.

World War II

World War II is a symbol of loss. Lu Ling lost her husband during the war, and she struggled to raise her daughter alone. Many women became widows because their husbands died in the war. Similarly, the war worsened many families' economic situation because they lost everything they had. Additionally, many war survivors were forced to become immigrants in other countries. For instance, Lu Ling ended up in America, where she remarried and started a new life.
