I suppose we can consider our own experiences with Covid-19 and then multiply the misery by about ten thousand. Most people who acquired the plague didn't just get sick, they died. A third of Europe was wiped out. People had little understanding of sickness, viruses, and medicine back then. Sickness was mixed with religion, astrology, and crude understanding of the human body. People were terrified, paranoid, and ill-equipped to handle even a mild illness let alone the deadly plague.
