Alymer is selfish, obsessed, and arrogant. His obsession revolves around science, and he is described as an accomplished scientist. Unfortunately, his obsession leads him to want to remove his wife's birthmark, which he views as a flaw. Note.... no one else sees it as a flaw, and she is seen as a beautiful woman. Over the course of the story, Alymer's obsession with Georgiana's birthmark and efforts to remove it put her life in danger. In the end, his actions are responsible for her death. True to form, he is more pleased with the removal of the birthmark than he is saddened by his wife's death.
