Arthur Norris

The main character of the story "The Last of Mr. Norris", Arthur is an eccentric middle-aged man who works in trade and often finds himself in a lot of trouble due to his mischievous tendencies. He declares himself a communist, which during that time in Germany came with extremes risks.

William Bradshaw

William is the narrator of the story "The Last of Mr. Norris". He is an Englishman who came abroad to Germany. On the train traveling to Germany he meets the peculiar seeming Mr. Norris and is immediately fascinated by the man and their eccentric friendship begins.

Schmidt

Schmidt is Mr. Norris's secretary whom William instantly dislikes upon their first meeting because of the way he seems to be eager to have Mr. Norris under his control. The story ends with Schmidt hunting down Mr. Norris, not wanting to break their twisted bond.

Sally Bowles

Sally Bowles is a character that appears in "Goodbye to Berlin" and "The Landauers". She is an eccentric female character, blunt and cruel in her honesty and eager to become a successful actress.

The author/Christopher Isherwood

The author himself is a character in several of the stories including "Goodbye to Berlin" and "The Landauers". He paints the image of the state of Germany, Berlin before the Second World War from his perspective showing the tension between communists and followers of the Nazi Party and the slow deterioration of safety and freedom as the Nazis take over.
