Taylor is amazed that, "There seemed to be no end to the things that could be hiding, waiting it out, right where you thought you could see it all." She was amazed that toads could exist in a place so inhospitable to them. The toads symbolize many of the characters in this story who exist in a place where they might be thought impossible. The toads also symbolize the resilience that Turtle, Taylor and other characters have to survive.
