The Bean Trees / Chapter 1

What 's the inference of “I had this feeling about what Newt’s whole life was going to amount to, and I felt sorry for him” ?

Taylor inferred that based upon his education (or lack thereof) and inability to perform in school, Newt did not have a very bright future in front of him. He had failed every grade, fooled around during class, and spent a lot of his time tossing spitballs in her hair. None-the-less, she didn't feel sorry for him until she saw his father hanging over the side of a billboard..... and in that moment she understood that Newt's future held much of the same.
