Edna's invititation to Robert for the boat trip is significant because it is the first time she actually steps over the line and acts in a completely impetuous manner. During the trip she acts recklessly, uncaring, and without propriety. She officially throws caution to the wind and leaves the fear of being a source of embarrassment or a topic of gossip behind her.
