What Edna wants most is love, and love is the fantasy she desires, as love is nothing more than an unattainable fantsy oin the Creole world. Robert becomes the means by which she believes she'll find love, but their love isn't to be. Their priorities are differnet, society will never accept them, and even after declaring their love for one another, they find that Edna's dream of freedom is the exact opposite of Robert's dream of marriage. She's already had that, and even he can't give her what she wants.
