Describe the unusual nature of the relationship between Edna and her children?

Edna is detached from her children. There doesn't seem to be any great love or affection. She doesn't hover, she doesn't oversee their actions.... she simply watches when she isn't busy with other things. It's almost as if she's watching someone else's children, rather than her own.
