Franklin realised he wasn't and couldn't be perfect. He decides that attempting to live up to virtues is better than not trying at all, "a speckled axe is best....A benevolent man should allow a few faults in himself, to keep his friends in countenance." Franklin was more successful at some virtues than others. He had trouble with pride but he decides that being aware of one's strengths and faults is very important.
