why do second-generation immigrants often make more money than their U.S. born peers?

This isn't dealt with directly in the text so I can make a general speculative comment. Often second generation kids have seen their parents work very hard. They have learned how to treat money and know first hand the struggle to succeed. This is only an opinion though. They often inherit this work ethic and in some cases businesses or the fruits of their parent's success.
