The desert is one of the novel's most prominent symbols. The desert itself becomes Satiago's teacher; it teaches him to understand the Language of the World. Through the desert, Santiago learns the secrets of the alchemist and finds the knowledge he needs to communicate with the elements (the desert, wind, and sun).
