The Aeneid

Leaving Dido

The scene where Aeneas leaves Dido in Carthage seems strange to me. Why does he ultimately leave her - because he is compelled to by the gods, or because he never was really in love with her?

I think it is both. Aeneas is really good at using people to achieve his own goals, and ultimately Dido in the way.
