Why does Tom have mixed emotions about testifying for Muff Potter afterward?

For most of the novel Tom and Huck are afraid to say anything about what happened at the cemetery. They were afraid of revealing Injun Joe as the real killer lest he seek vengeance on them. At the same time Tom did not want to see poor Muff Potter executed for a crime that he didn't commit.
