why do you think Tom wrote on the bark and put his treasures in Joe's hat?

After Tom has observed the older generation looking for the "lost children," he realizes that he is missed, a thought that comforts him.  At some point, he likely leaves these clues to his existence to let the town know that they are, somehow, still alive.
