Why did Tom go to jackson island?

Tom, along with his friend Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn, go to Jackson Island to play at becoming pirates.  Tom wants to get away from the accusations agains Muff Potter since he knows that Muff is ot guilty of murder, but he also knows that Injun Joe, who is guilty, will be after Tom once Tom testifies.
