Tom's worldview is a form of solipsism. He has a very difficult time seeing beyond himself. Some might call him selfish or self-obsessed.... I just see him as a child, who doesn't want to see the other side. Thus, life is a game for his own pleasure, and everyone else be damned. In Tom's eyes, his own needs come first. This doesn't mean he doesn't grow over the course of the novel.... or that he doesn't have moments of empathy or awareness of others. It simply means that he sees himself first and foremost.
