How does Mr. Dobbins's book get torn?

The book, Professor Somebody's Anatomy, was Mr. Dobbins's. Finding herself alone, Becky opens the drawer to his desk and opens the book. Inside, she sees an engraved frontispiece of a naked human figure. At that moment, Tom comes in and startles Becky, who accidentally tears the picture down the middle.
