in the adventure of the speckled band, did holmes figure it out by himself or did helen tell him about the fortune?

Holmes knew that Roylott's monthly allowance would end with his step-daughters' marriages. He did not wish to lose the income that allowed him to live comfortably without working.

Dr Roylott's need money to survive and he was ready to do anything for that. He was greedy to make money but not on right lines and was ready to hurt or kill anyone if anything comes on his way. He was evil at his heart and was prepared to do it for getting a fortune. He was planning for sometime to aquire the fortune through his wrong deeds. As the step daughters marriage came up he was sure he will not get any more money after the marriage. He was sure that it is not easy to stop the marriages so there was no other way in front of him. So holmes know well that Dr roylott was killing his step daughters.
