how does huckleberry finn's personality contribute to the plot?

Huck helps Jim all the way through the book. He stands buy his friend even though aiding and abetting an escaped slave was a serious crime. Huck hides Jim and covers for him many times. Huck helps Jim make a final attempt for escape when he is locked up.
