Gordy becomes Junior’s closest friend at Reardan. Like Junior, Gordy is committed to his education. However, Gordy (who is white) has had years of hope, support, and opportunities which have allowed him to excel educationally. He becomes Junior’s mentor and teaches him the best ways to study and to retain information. Both Junior anf Gordy are outsiders in the school. Gordy and his "superbrain" make him the odd boy out. Junior, with his odd looks, and unique wit, make him an odd boy out. Gordy appreciates Junior's sharp wit and Junior appreciates Gordy's eccentricities, Gordy considers himself an anglophile, and sharp intelligence.
