Chapter 25 - Optical Instruments - General Problems - Page 742: 72

Answer

The adult will see more detail; For the child M = 2.6 and for the adult M = 3.6.

Work Step by Step

As discussed in the book, the maximum magnification occurs with the image at the near point. Find the magnification from equation 25–2b with the normal eye focused on the near point. For the child: $$M=1+\frac{N}{f}$$ $$M=1+\frac{15cm}{9.5cm}=2.6$$ For the adult: $$M=1+\frac{N}{f}$$ $$M=1+\frac{25cm}{9.5cm}=3.6$$ The person with the normal eye (i.e., the adult) sees more detail.
