Like the transmitter’s antenna, the receiver’s rod antenna should also be vertical, to obtain the best reception. The transmitted EM wave has its oscillating electric field in a vertical plane, so a vertical receiving antenna would do much better. The electrons in the receiving antenna would have a long vertical path to oscillate up and down, boosting the signal.
