Chapter 8 - Rotational Kinematics - Check Your Understanding - Page 210: 17

Answer

A rolling yo-yo, the moon rotating around the earth and a figure skater carrying out a jump and spin.

Work Step by Step

A yo-yo, when rolling, is rotating around the axis at the center of the yo-yo, while this axis is also constantly rolling up and down. The moon rotates around the earth, so the earth is the axis of the rotation of the moon. The earth, at the same time, also rotates around the Sun. A figure skater, during a jump and spin, keeps rotating around an axis going through the skater's center. However, because the skater jumps to a different position, the axis is not fixed.
